6 02ers met at: 8 a.m., Saturday morning at La Jolla Independent in San Diego Co. Carl Nelson the owner and super nice guy gave us a tour of the shop, which included a 503, an Issetta, a few 700's, and Carl's personal ground up resto cs coupe. Really cool. Jeff Tighe who works for Carl planned the drive, and after a quick stop for fuel we headed southeast toward the Cleveland National Forest. Just as we entered the freeway we encountered an excited 5 series driver who was checking out all our 02's and giving us thumbs up (we found out later through his message board posting that he was a Las Vegas driving school coordinator visiting San Diego and just happened to run into us).We drove through eastern San Diego Co. through some twisties (with an unplanned dirt road excursion) then north to Julian. We stopped at the Julian Pie Company who's owner Tom, happened to be one of our group. He provided free apple pie, ice cream for all. Thanks Tom! We cruised through the main part of town with our 6 02's in a caravan. Then we stopped for lunch at the Chicken Shack where they serve the biggest chickens you ever saw. After lunch it was off through the twisties again and back to the highway where we all went our separate ways. Many thanks to Jeff Tighe for leading this adventurous drive.
